About Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu is an international undergraduate college fraternity with over 275 chapters (195 active) chartered and over 225,000 members initiated since its founding. Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 by three cadets at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virgina. Founders James Frank Hopkins, Judge Greenfield Quarles, and James McIlvaine Riley formed Sigma Nu shortly after Hopkins witnessed what he considered a hazing ritual by another fraternity. Sigma Nu’s existence remained secret until the founders publicly announced their new society on the first day of January 1869, the accepted birth date of Sigma Nu Fraternity. The Fraternity’s values are summarized as an adherence to the principles of brotherly Love, Truth, and Honor. Because of its military heritage, Sigma Nu retains many military trappings in its chapter ranks and traditions, and places much importance on the concept of personal honor..
Founded in 1989, the Lambda Upsilion chapter of Sigma Nu has maintained its reputation as one of CSUF’s premier fraternities. We pride ourselves by excelling in all areas of fraternal life including brotherhood, social, sports, academic, and leadership. It is often said that there is no “typical” Sigma Nu and this is due to our members’ great diversity of interests, activities, and backgrounds. We are all bound together by our pledge to the ideals of Love, Truth, and Honor which have been principles of Sigma Nu since the American Civil War. These ideals and our strong diversity help us to achieve a level of brotherhood which is second to none.
Sigma Nu has provided young men with the most memorable part of their college experience. It will provide you with the best friendships you will ever make, the best times you will ever enjoy, and the memories to last a lifetime. If you are just entering CSUF, going into your sophomore year feeling deprived of ‘the college experience’, or transferring in as a third year, we assure you Sigma Nu has something to offer you.
